Kindergarten Math Skills Checklist

Kindergarten math is about numbers becoming real: counting things that matter, comparing groups, and discovering that quantities can be put together and taken apart. Here is what most kindergartners work toward across the year — use it as a conversation guide, not a test.

Counting & number sense

  • Count to 100 by ones and by tens
  • Count a group of up to 20 objects accurately (one number per object)
  • Compare two groups: more, fewer, or the same
  • Read and write numbers 0–20
  • Count on from a number other than one

Addition & subtraction foundations

  • Add and subtract within 5 confidently
  • Solve put-together and take-apart stories within 10 using objects or drawings
  • Break numbers up to 10 into pairs (7 is 5 and 2, 6 and 1…)
  • Find the number that makes 10 from any number 1–9

Place value beginnings

  • See teen numbers as ten plus some ones (13 is 10 and 3)

Shapes & space

  • Name common 2D and 3D shapes in any orientation
  • Describe positions: above, below, beside, next to
  • Combine simple shapes to make bigger ones

Measurement & sorting

  • Compare two objects by length or weight
  • Sort objects into groups and count each group

How parents can help

  • Count everything, everywhere — stairs, grapes, toy cars. Real objects beat worksheets at this age.
  • Play "how many to make 10?" with fingers — it builds the single most useful fact family in elementary math.
  • Keep sessions under ten minutes and stop while it's still fun.

Frequently asked questions

Should my kindergartner be doing worksheets?

A few minutes of pencil work builds fine-motor and number-writing skills, but most kindergarten math should be hands-on: counting real objects, comparing, sorting, and talking about quantities. Worksheets work best as a light supplement.

My child can count to 100 but miscounts 12 objects. Is that normal?

Very. Reciting the number sequence and counting objects one-to-one are different skills. Practice touching each object while counting — accuracy at 20 objects matters more than reciting to 100.
