4th Grade Math Skills Checklist
Fourth grade scales everything up: multi-digit multiplication, long division, fraction arithmetic, and decimals make their first appearance. Fluency from third grade gets put to work. Here is what most fourth graders work toward.
Multiplication & division
- ✓Multiply up to four digits by one digit, and two digits by two digits
- ✓Divide with one-digit divisors, including problems with remainders
- ✓Find factor pairs; recognize prime and composite numbers
- ✓Solve multi-step word problems and interpret remainders sensibly
Fractions & decimals
- ✓Generate and explain equivalent fractions
- ✓Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators
- ✓Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators
- ✓Multiply a fraction by a whole number
- ✓Write fractions with denominators 10 and 100 as decimals; compare decimals to hundredths
Place value & large numbers
- ✓Read, write, and compare numbers to 1,000,000
- ✓Round multi-digit numbers to any place
- ✓Understand that each place is ten times the place to its right
Geometry & measurement
- ✓Measure and sketch angles with a protractor
- ✓Classify shapes by lines and angles; identify lines of symmetry
- ✓Use area and perimeter formulas for rectangles
- ✓Convert measurements within one system (km to m, hours to minutes)
How parents can help
- Long division falters when multiplication facts are shaky — five minutes of fact review pays off double here.
- Cooking is fraction practice with a reward: half the recipe, double the recipe.
- Ask what a remainder means in the story — "3 buses and 12 kids left over" is where division becomes thinking.

Frequently asked questions
My fourth grader struggles with long division. Where do I start?
Check multiplication facts first — long division is mostly multiplication and subtraction in a trench coat. If facts are solid, slow the algorithm down and narrate each step's meaning ("how many groups of 7 fit in 45?") before worrying about speed.
Fractions seem much harder this year. Is that expected?
Yes — fourth grade moves from naming fractions to operating on them. Visual models (number lines, fraction strips) should stay on the table all year; the arithmetic sticks when the picture comes first.
