5th Grade Math Skills Checklist
Fifth grade completes elementary arithmetic: all four operations with decimals and fractions, volume, the coordinate plane, and the order of operations. It is the launchpad for middle-school math. Here is what most fifth graders work toward.
Whole numbers & decimals
- ✓Multiply multi-digit whole numbers fluently
- ✓Divide with two-digit divisors
- ✓Read, write, compare, and round decimals to thousandths
- ✓Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths
- ✓Explain patterns when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10
Fractions
- ✓Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers)
- ✓Multiply fractions and mixed numbers
- ✓Divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions
- ✓Interpret a fraction as division (3/4 = 3 ÷ 4)
Expressions & the coordinate plane
- ✓Use parentheses and evaluate expressions with the order of operations
- ✓Graph points in the first quadrant and interpret coordinate values
- ✓Generate and compare numerical patterns
Geometry & measurement
- ✓Understand volume and measure it by counting unit cubes
- ✓Use the volume formulas for rectangular prisms (V = l × w × h)
- ✓Convert measurements and use conversions in multi-step problems
- ✓Classify 2D figures in a hierarchy (every square is a rectangle…)
How parents can help
- Estimate before every decimal calculation — "about how big should the answer be?" catches misplaced decimal points better than checking afterward.
- Fraction division makes sense through stories: "how many quarter-cups are in 3 cups?" before any rule.
- Board games with coordinates (Battleship) make the coordinate plane automatic.

Frequently asked questions
What should be solid before middle school?
Comfortable fraction and decimal arithmetic, quick multiplication facts, and the habit of estimating answers. Pre-algebra leans on all three constantly — a summer spent shoring these up is the highest-value preparation there is.
My fifth grader rushes and makes careless errors. What helps?
Build the estimate-first habit and have them check one problem of their own choosing per page. Accuracy incentives ("find your own error before I do") work better than repeating "slow down."
