1st Grade Math Skills Checklist
First grade turns counting into arithmetic: addition and subtraction within 20, the first real understanding of tens and ones, and word problems that make numbers tell stories. Here is what most first graders work toward.
Addition & subtraction
- ✓Add and subtract within 20, fluently within 10
- ✓Solve word problems within 20 (including missing-number problems like 8 + ? = 11)
- ✓Understand the equals sign as "the same amount as"
- ✓Use strategies: counting on, making ten, using doubles
Place value
- ✓Count to 120, starting from any number
- ✓Understand two-digit numbers as tens and ones
- ✓Compare two-digit numbers with <, >, =
- ✓Add a two-digit and a one-digit number; add tens to a two-digit number
- ✓Find ten more or ten less without counting
Measurement & data
- ✓Order three objects by length; measure with same-size units laid end to end
- ✓Tell time to the hour and half-hour
- ✓Read simple picture and bar charts
Shapes & fractions foundations
- ✓Build and identify shapes by their defining features
- ✓Split circles and rectangles into halves and quarters, and name the parts
How parents can help
- Make ten is the strategy of the year: 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3. Say it out loud together.
- Daily two-minute fact practice beats a weekly half-hour — little and often builds fluency.
- Ask "how do you know?" after answers — explaining locks the strategy in.

Frequently asked questions
How fluent should a first grader be with math facts?
By year's end, sums and differences within 10 should come quickly and comfortably — within a few seconds, without finger-counting every time. Within 20, strategies (making ten, doubles) matter more than raw speed.
How much math practice per day is right for a first grader?
Ten to fifteen focused minutes is plenty outside schoolwork. Consistency beats duration — a short daily page and a real-life counting conversation do more than a long weekend session.
