Watch the video and learn about Elephant & Calf!
A baby elephant is called a calf! It is born big and wrinkly, covered in soft wispy hairs, and stays close to its mama and herd.
Elephants live on the grassy savannas and in the forests of Africa. They roam in loving family herds led by a wise grandmother called the matriarch.
Mama elephant drinks up to 50 gallons of water a day and eats grasses, leaves, bark, and fruit. Her calf drinks only mama's milk for the first two years!
Mama uses her trunk like a gentle arm to guide, hug, and steady her calf. The whole herd of aunties and grandmothers help babysit and protect the little one too!
The calf learns to use its wobbly trunk by watching mama โ it practices picking up sticks and splashing in puddles. It takes months to get it just right!
Baby elephants are born weighing about 200 pounds โ as heavy as two big motorcycles โ and can stand up and walk within just a few hours of being born!
